How illustrated gifts work

You send the artist reference photos and details; they draw or paint the portrait (by hand or digitally), usually send you a proof, then print or post the original. Styles range from simple line drawings to detailed watercolours.

What to check

• Original or print? Some sellers send the original painting; many send a print of a digital illustration. Both are fine — just know which you’re buying.
• Photos. The artist can only draw what they can see. Send clear, well-lit photos (several angles helps) — see our photo guide.
• Proofs and changes. Find out how many rounds of changes are included.
• Timing. Popular illustrators can have long waiting lists, especially before Christmas.
• Your rights. Buying a portrait doesn’t usually mean you own the copyright in it; the artist normally keeps it. That rarely matters for a gift, but ask before using it commercially.
