Monograms and initials

Strictly, a monogram combines two or more letters into one design; separate initials side by side are sometimes called a cypher. In shops, “monogrammed” usually just means initials.

Getting the order right

There’s no single rule, and sellers differ — so tell them exactly what you want and check the proof.

• Simple initials: first, middle, last — e.g. A J W.
• Traditional three-letter monogram: the surname initial often goes in the middle, larger — e.g. A W J for Anna Jane Williams.
• Couples: many people put the shared surname initial in the middle, with each first initial either side.

What to check

• Debossed vs embossed (leather). Debossed letters are pressed in; embossed are raised. Foil can add colour.
• Letter size. Small items (cufflinks, signet rings) suit two or three letters at most.
• Spelling of the initials. Easy to mix up order — write them out in full on your order notes.
