Made by hand by an independent maker — pottery, carved wood, leather, knitting and silversmithing — so each piece is a little different.
What “hand-made” means here
We use hand-made for gifts where a maker shapes the item itself — throwing a mug, carving a spoon, stitching a wallet, knitting a blanket or forming a silver pendant — rather than personalising a ready-made blank. Many hand-made items are also engraved, stamped or embroidered.
Amazon has a dedicated Amazon Handmade section for artisans, and many Etsy sellers are makers too. Listings should say what is made by hand and what isn’t.
What to check
- Lead time. Making by hand takes longer than personalising a blank, and small makers can have queues. Check the dispatch time on the listing.
- Variation. Natural materials and hand work mean the colour, grain or glaze will differ from the photos. That’s normal — but if it matters, ask.
- Materials. For jewellery, check the metal (for example sterling silver, gold-plated or gold-filled). For leather, check the type.
- Care. Hand-made pieces often come with specific care instructions.
